Message from the School Board Chairman
(Mr. Lau Hui Siong)

It is with a great sense of satisfaction to be able to pen a few words here for such an auspicious occasion. We are gathered here to witness the official opening of our new school building on the occasion of the 50th Anniversary commemorating the founding of the great institution of learning. On behalf of the Board of Management, the Principal, teachers, and the student body, I would like to express our gratitude and thanks to God for this blessing.

Our double happiness on this occasion is brought to a completion by the presence of our distinguished guests. We are honoured by our gracious Chief Minister, YAB Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr.) Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud and his wife, YAB Datuk Amar Puan Sri (Dr.) Hajjah Laila Taib, for being here to officiate this occasion.

I take this opportune moment to express our indebtedness to our industrious Minister for Infrastructure Development and Communications, YB Datuk Wong Soon Koh, who has personally attended to our numerous requests for assistance on so many occasions. On the same note, we are very grateful to the Director of Education, Tuan Haji Putit Matzen, whose good office has expedited our effort in putting up this building.

This building costs RM4.5 million. Over the last five years we have made very heavy demands on the generous members of our Board of Management as well as the public to come up with the bulk of the cost. Two principals who have been in the office and their team of very dedicated and diligent teachers and thousands of students, both past and present, have sweated in this endeavour. This elegant building is the fruit of their efforts. As the Chairman of the project I am overwhelmed by their enthusiasm.

On this Golden Anniversary, I take pride in the high standard of achievement maintained by the school in every field of academic pursuits over the last 50 years, a feat which is manifested in the awards “Sekolah Harapan” by the Ministry of Education and “Sekolah Menengah Cemerlang” by the Sarawak Foundation. It is to this end – the pursuit of excellence in education – that we are all working for.

With God’s abundant blessings, we look forward to the dawn of the coming millennium with the confidence that this school would continue the noble mission of nurturing generations of wholesome citizens who would further enrich our nation.
