COMMENT It was a weekend fraught with anxiety over what some pyromaniacs had threatened to do.

In the event, it turned out to be an occasion when meaningful symbolism triumphed as incendiary intent fizzled out - and the rest of the country breathed a little easier.

The children of light had triumphed over the children of darkness - that was the essential story of the weekend just past.

With the state of racial and religious things entire in our beloved Malaysia today - rumours of a festival of Bible-burning, continuing humiliation of the Malaysian Indians especially, the death of critical sensibility in our public universities, the devastating revelations of the ‘Sabah IC-gate’ plot, the issue of ‘stateless Indians’ and the criminalisation of children not able to be schooled because they were born ‘stateless’ and a host of other issues Malaysian-ly unbecoming.

Locked-in syndrome

Although the average Malay is aware of much that goes on around him, his intransigence leads others to describe him as suffering from something like the "locked-in syndrome". In this disorder, the patient is unable to move or speak, because all of his muscles are paralysed and communication is limited to eye movements.

Many people perceive Malays to be mere observers, who do not want to take an active role in many decision-making processes, or engage in important issues.

QUESTION TIME Numbers, they say, never lie although statistics can be made to. Where they are most useful, however, is when they can be analysed to give a scale of the magnitude of the task ahead for someone who wants to achieve something.

The opposition Pakatan Rakyat coalition, comprising of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), PAS, DAP and allies in Sabah and Sarawak, has made plain its target of taking over the government in the next 13th general election, and is publicly confident of doing so.
