Mariam Mokhtar,
Waytha Moorthy has just ended his hunger strike. He has been on strike for 21 days. He is unable to respond to your questions personally for obvious reasons and he has asked me to respond on his behalf.
The responses though they come from me closely mirror Waytha's thoughts.

Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng has expressed fear of speaking to journalists from the MCA-controlled English daily The Star.
"I am frightened to speak to The Star because they will twist what I say.
"After the last episode, we will only communicate in writing, so there will be no dispute - at least around this election period," Lim said after visiting the Thaipusam celebrations in Penang yesterday.

With the state of racial and religious things entire in our beloved Malaysia today - rumours of a festival of Bible-burning, continuing humiliation of the Malaysian Indians especially, the death of critical sensibility in our public universities, the devastating revelations of the ‘Sabah IC-gate’ plot, the issue of ‘stateless Indians’ and the criminalisation of children not able to be schooled because they were born ‘stateless’ and a host of other issues Malaysian-ly unbecoming.

QUESTION TIME Numbers, they say, never lie although statistics can be made to. Where they are most useful, however, is when they can be analysed to give a scale of the magnitude of the task ahead for someone who wants to achieve something.
The opposition Pakatan Rakyat coalition, comprising of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), PAS, DAP and allies in Sabah and Sarawak, has made plain its target of taking over the government in the next 13th general election, and is publicly confident of doing so.

GREAT MOVES: Choir members execute well-choreographed dances to embellish their singing.
I FELT rather awkward at the grand ballroom of Four Points by Sheraton Kuching on Thursday night as I stood ramrod, my chest puffed up and a lump building up in my throat listening to a most inspiring live rendition of our national anthem.

Many Malaysians surely must be sick to death - I know I am - of the latest ploy by hateful people, many within this regime, to split this country even further, to cultivate distrust at a time when they themselves have lost the trust of the people.
I am talking, of course, of this pathetic ‘strategy’ of churning out one bogeyman after another to frighten Malaysians, especially Muslims, presumably in the forlorn hope that we will all run back into the exploitative arms of this regime and its underlings.

It is clear and simple that both Suaram and Malaysiakini have done nothing wrong in uncovering and reporting on all the critical information surrounding the Scorpene submarine deal, potentially among the top corruption scandal cases in the history of Malaysia.

On Nov 3, 2012, OHMSI or the Oriental Hearts and Mind Study Institute, collaborating with the Islamic Renaissance Front or IRF, will organise a public dialogue on the above topic.
In my estimate, Christians form about 10 percent of the Malaysian population and have a voting power of about 800,000 at the coming general election (GE). Therefore, my advice to both parties at the GE is: please do not take the Christians for granted. Our votes do matter and in about 30 percent of the constituencies we can shape the general election, I suspect.

The problems of Penans affected by construction of the Murum dam will not be resolved as long as state government policies remain unfriendly to them, said Sarawak PKR head Baru Bain.
He said that creating a special ministry to look into the Penans’ problems and demands is of secondary importance.

Trouble is said to be brewing in the five-month old Sarawak Workers Party apparently stirred up by financial problems as three members of its supreme council are quitting, an inside source revealed today.
Even some of its potential candidates, including Ellison Ludan, a lecturer tipped to vie against Aaron Dagang in Kanowit are said to be taking the feet off the gas pedal of their political activities for the same reason, he said.

After the furore concerning the leaked question on Bersih 3.0 in the mock SPM test papers, a more serious problem has emerged; the Moral Studies paper for the upcoming examination has been stolen.
Originally, the trial papers had prompted concerns that young minds were being indoctrinated - a charge denied by deputy ministers Puad Zarkashi and Wee Ka Siong.

Sarawak Chief Minister Taib Mahmud is in effect, already king. To his right, sits his “arm-candy” wife. All that is missing from the royal portrait are the jewelled crown, the ermine robes, the coat of arms, sceptre and orb.
Spread before the wannabe king and his consort, is his kingdom - Sarawak - which is both blessed and cursed with an abundance of natural resources; blessed because it has the means to benefit the Sarawak people; cursed because the riches serve to benefit only one man - Taib.

COMMENT It was a weekend fraught with anxiety over what some pyromaniacs had threatened to do.
In the event, it turned out to be an occasion when meaningful symbolism triumphed as incendiary intent fizzled out - and the rest of the country breathed a little easier.
The children of light had triumphed over the children of darkness - that was the essential story of the weekend just past.

Although the average Malay is aware of much that goes on around him, his intransigence leads others to describe him as suffering from something like the "locked-in syndrome". In this disorder, the patient is unable to move or speak, because all of his muscles are paralysed and communication is limited to eye movements.
Many people perceive Malays to be mere observers, who do not want to take an active role in many decision-making processes, or engage in important issues.

LAST week, I was torn between two worlds of different contrasting emotions, affected by the way politicians from both sides of the fence responded to the Automated Enforcement System (AES) issue and how the media handled the erotic act on YouTube of blogger Alvin Tan Jye Yee and his partner Vivian Lee.

After a couple of weeks or so of unrelenting inanity, enough to make me wax lyrical (well, almost) in this column, I thought of writing something nice, inoffensive, light-hearted even, this week.
After all, two Malaysian court decisions this past week certainly gave many of us reason to cheer.

I was kind of hoping for a gala launch and monster promotion of 'Malaysia Mania', my latest book-length collection of Malaysiakini columns.
A kenduri featuring free food for about 130,000 of my closest friends would have been just right, I thought, but then I was upstaged on that score by the Malacca Chief Minister Mohd Ali Rustam’s gala celebrations for the wedding of his eldest son.

The Malaysian Electoral Roll Analysis Project (Merap) has found about 65,000 ‘foreigners’ on the electoral roll gazetted for the third quarter of 2011.
Defining ‘foreigners’ as those who are recorded by the Election Commission (EC) as having a race foreign to Malaysia, Merap found that about 58,000, or a whopping 90 percent, of these voters were born in Malaysia.

The Penans tightened their blockade of the Murum dam construction by cutting off another linkage road to the dam site starting on Thursday, thus paralysing the transportation of building materials worth hundreds of thousands of ringgit.
The new blockade was set up on an old narrow logging road through an oil palm plantation, passable only for four-wheel drive vehicles.

The Latin root word ‘polis’ is the same etymological foundation for the concept of our modern version of the Athenian democracy. The roots of the concept start with the Greek democratic city state, then called a ‘polis.’ But, the same word is today used to describe the modern city or a metropolis, like in the name, Annapolis or Minneapolis, and is the home also for the root word for public policy, or even the police departments in all countries.

The word ‘perspective’ must be one of the most complex words in human living. It defines meaning. It also defines difference between arrogance and humility. When George W Bush declared his War on Terror, the American president said, “You are either with me or against me!”
When Ayatollah Khomeini, the then-leader of Iran, declared “War on Salman Rushdie,” with the death warrant and judgment, his meaning was no different than that of the American president. It was his perspective, too. But, can any human being issue a death warrant, if one is not the author of life? Is it not the height of arrogance to assume, and play God, when one is only a miniscule aspect of life, which appears for a while and then disappears, in the affairs of the Universe?
