Sekolah Menengah Bantuan Methodist was founded by the Methodist Church and has been prestigious academically in Sibu. The early days of the school can still be seen from the Anglo-Chinese school founded by James Hoover at Sungai Merah in 1903. 

1903 

Rev. James Hoover opened the Anglo-Chinese school for boys at the new Foochow settlement at Sungai Merah, Sibu.

1905 The Anglo-Chinese school was moved to Sibu town.
1913 The Anglo-Chinese School was renamed to Yiik Ing Girls' school, which offers lower Chinese education to girls. The boys were transferred to the agriculture school at Bukit Lan.
1925 English stream classes began but it was closed later on. The English classes started again in 1940.
1941 Madam J.B. Chong and Rev. Gerald Summers opened the Anglo-Chinese school for boys at Island Road (Jalan Pulau) with 98 students.
1942 Closure ordered by the Japanese authority during the Japanese Occupation.
1946 The Methodist Church council accepted the suggestion from Rev. Ling Kai Cheng to set up a Methodist Secondary School.
1947 Rev. E.O. McGraw reopened the Anglo-Chinese School for boys after World War II.
1947 Yiik Ing Girls School changed its name to Methodist Primary and Secondary School and it accepts both boys and girls. A big piece of land became the site of the Methodist Secondary School was acquired with the efforts of Rev. Ling Kai Cheng.
1948 The Education Department of Sarawak approves the construction of the Methodist Secondary School as planned.
1949 The historical beginning of SMB Methodist, better known as Methodist Secondary School. This secondary school was officially launched on the 19th January, 1949 with a grand ceremony at Masland Methodist Church, Sibu. School started with 35 students at the Hoover Memorial Building. The first principal was Rev. Ling Wen Tsung.
1950 The double storey building was completed at the new school site. The students took the 'Junior Cambridge' examination for the first time.
1951 All students from the lower secondary and higher secondary in both English and Chinese streams were shifted to the new building.

The school management board was established and rev. Ling Kai Cheng as the first Chairman.

32 students took the 'Chinese Senior Middle' examination for the first time.

1952 Students took the Senior Cambridge for the first time.
1953 The 'Summers Memorial Building' which houses the old school hall (currently converted into a library), library and administration office. This building was named after Rev. Gerald Summers as a memorial for the contribution to the school.
1958 3 Science lab, a Home Economics room, toilet & basketball court is constructed.
1959 10th Anniversary Celebration
1960 Construction of 6 classrooms extending the Science lab & Home Economics building. A new workshop & girls toilet was constructed in the same year.
1962 Transformation of Chinese stream classes to English stream classes began with Junior Middle 1 class.
1963 A new boys hostel was built, complete with a recreation & dinning room.
1964 The old boys hostel was demolished to pave way for a new double-storey building for Form 6 classes which was expected to start in 1965.
1965 Lower 6 Arts class began
1967 The end of Chinese stream classes
1969 20th Anniversary Celebration
1971 Construction of a 3 storey building which houses the senior Science labs & library.
1973 Alumni-Alumnae Association of SMB Methodist was founded. Mr. Hii Yii Chiong was its first President.
1974 25th Anniversary Celebration
1975 Afternoon session classes began to accommodate a larger number of students. LCE Curriculum activities started at Form 1  
1976 Form 3 students took the LCE examinations for the first time.
1979 30th Anniversary Celebration and the launching of the new 4 storey building (Block A) which houses the Lecture Hall, Canteen & 3 classrooms.

Students took the MCE examinations for the first time.

1980 School had been declared a 'Category A' School
1983 The syllabus was changed from English to Malay starting from Form 1.

The Alumni-Alumnae Association of SMB Methodist had contributed a basketball and tennis court to the school.

1985

Form 3 students took their SRP examination for the first time.

The Alumni-Alumnae Association of SMB Methodist contributed by forming the Computer Club. 

1986 Obtained the best result in the SRP examination at the state level. Won the first place in co-curiculum activities in Sibu.
1987 SPM examination taken for the first time by the students.
1989

STPM examination taken for the first time by the students and obtained the best result on the state level.

1992 Won the “Piala Ketua Menteri” debate.
1993 Won the “Forum Remaja” at the state level.
1994

The new building project was started. Won the “Pertandingan Peningkatan Keselamatan, Kebersihan & Keceriaan (3K) Alam Sekitar Sekolah” at the national level.

 

1995 Obtained the “Sekolah Harapan” title at the state level.
1996

Obtained the “Sekolah Harapan Negara” title at the national level. The new building fitting the School Hall, 18 classes, special rooms and science laboratories was completed.

 

1997

Won the Chief Minister Special Title, “Sekolah Cemerlang”

Two new tennis court were constructed. The old school hall was renovated and converted into the new School Library using the computer system, contributed by the Alumni-Alumnae Association of SMB Methodist. The toilet for boys were also renovated by the Alumni-Alumnae Association of SMB Methodist.

1998

The road by the school was widen by the JKR by the help of Datuk Wong Soon Koh to reduce traffic congestion.

“Cover-way” path from the main gate to the new building was constructed by the Alumni-Alumnae Association of SMB Methodist.

“Cover-way” drain was completed by the JKR and SMC to ensure the safety of pedestrian and the smooth flow of traffic.
