PBB leader urges Supp to re-invent itself |
|

(Malaysiakini News)
Having chosen to remain within the BN, the embattled Sarawak United Peoples' Party (SUPP) must re-invent itself with new ideas and input to stay relevant, said Abang Johari Openg. The Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) deputy president said the same policy also applied to other state BN component parties, including PBB. PBB saw over 20 percent changes in its party candidates at every election, by injecting young people, together with experienced and able leaders, to lead the backbone of the state BN coalition, he noted. "In this case, I feel SUPP is undergoing that process of adjustment and their leaders will have to gauge for themselves what sort of changes they must make within the party, as well as to look at their own weaknesses," Abang Johari, who is also state housing and urban development minister. He was speaking to reporters after presenting Hari Raya gifts to 59 Muslim families at the Hung Nam Siang T'ng Home in Kuching today. Changing environment
Likewise, he said, PBB, which had a long history with SUPP, was trying very hard to adjust to the changing environment by fielding new faces, especially women candidates, with the right experience and academic qualification to be able to tackle the current problems through technology and scientific means.

Bernama News (September 07, 2010 ) Khairy: I am afraid the Foreign Ministry had failed to convey the true feeling of the people of Malaysia to Indonesia. KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 7 — Umno Youth has urged Foreign Ministry to send a strong message to Indonesia to have the anti-Malaysia demonstrations in Jakarta halted and prevented from recurring. Its chief, Khairy Jamaluddin said the people of Malaysia could no longer tolerate with the demonstrations by several groups of activists outside the Malaysian Embassy in Jakarta as it involved the dignity of Malaysians. “I welcome the meeting between the Malaysian and Indonesian foreign ministers yesterday but the reciprocity between them have no meaning if the protesters continue to attack the embassy. |

RM5 bil to help bumis own shares |

Malaysiakini News
The government has set aside RM5 billion through Ekuiti Nasional Berhad (Ekuinas) established by the Finance Ministry as an initial allocation to help bumiputeras own selected shares. Deputy Finance Minister Senator Awang Adek Hussein said at the same time, the allocation is also aimed at ensuring bumiputera equity does not fall into the hands of others.
"For example, if there are bumiputeras wanting to sell their shares because they are retiring from doing business, the government can consider assistance," he told reporters after a breaking of fast event at Kampung Sungai, Perupuk in Bachok last night. He also said apart from this, priority will be given to bumiputeras wanting to own shares in government-linked companies (GLCs). He explained that the move is not intended to grab shares owned by the other races as some are fearful of.

Speak out against irrationality |

Mariam Mokhtar (Malaysiakini)
When Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak said, “If we read the mainstream media, intuitively we regard it as an authoritative report whose facts cannot be questioned,” the majority of Malaysians disagree. One man's fact is another man's lie. The discriminating public sees the government machinery protecting the interests of Umno and their sycophants, and hiding the crimes they have committed. What the voting public really hates are hypocritical politicians who are removed from reality.
Bloggers, cartoonists, journalists, and rappers are feeling the heat in Malaysia: Namewee of 'Negarakuku' fame raised pulses for taking a stand against racism; Tenaga Nasional did not see the light with Irwan Abdul Rahman's satirical blog; New Sarawak Tribune executive editor Paul Si got a dousing over the article “Is Taib testing the waters?”; the Home Ministry risks being caricatured by cartoonists for banning Zunar's book of political cartoons. If the government had dealt decisively with the two racist headmistresses, instead of pussy-footing around, we might have been spared another hip-hop video from Namewee. Rap music is not everyone's cup of tea, but Namewee understands the youth.

Race Relations Act may not help |
|
Opinions
|
|
Tuesday, 07 September 2010 |
Terence Netto (Malaysiakini)
COMMENT The proposal to have a Race Relations Act as a deterrent to racist taunts seeks a legislative solution to a problem that is essentially social requiring education and other prescriptions to ease it.
Social maladies, like racist taunts and baby dumping, are notoriously impervious to the impact of legislative deterrents. In fact, resort to the latter is an admission that society's educative and other measures that dispense socially emollient nostrums are defective.
To rely on legislative prescriptions for problems such as racist taunts without requisite attention to educational solutions is to place the cart before the horse.
DAP chairman Karpal Singh's call that the government speed up the drafting of a Race Relations Act to deter racist taunts or slurs is now seconded by the Bar Council.
Both the DAP and the Bar Council are against the introduction of hudud. How different is the Islamist argument, recently espoused by PAS spiritual leader Nik Aziz Nik Mat, that hudud is a deterrent to baby dumping from the one that proposes a legislative deterrent to verbal offences against social proprieties?

'Gov't cracking down on freedom of expression' |

News

Monday, 06 September 2010 |
Malaysiakini News
Human rights pressure group Suaram has decried the authorities' increasing attempts to curb freedom of expression.
Suaram coordinator Hasbeemasputra Abu Bakar said there have been numerous examples of these in recent weeks, such as the suspension of 988 radio DJ Jamaluddin Ibrahim (left) and Sarawak Tribune editor Paul Si.
More recently, Hasbeemasputra cites the decision to charge blogger Irwan Abdul Rahman for posting a satire titled "TNB to sue WWF over Earth Hour" and is now liable to RM50,000 fine, up to a year in jail or both.
"(All this) points to a clear and continuing pattern of intimidation to curb freedom of expression and freedom of the press in Malaysia," said Hasbeemasputra.
Irwan was charged under Section 233 (1) (a) of the MCMC Act 1998 for "improper use of network facilities... by making... any content that is obscene, indecent, false, menacing or offensive, in characters with malicious intent".

'S'wak-linked firms at epicentre of US subprime crisis' |
|
News
|
|
Sunday, 05 September 2010 |
(Malaysiakini News)
There have been many allegations against Samling Global, the timber multinational giant with close ties to Sarawak Chief Minister Abdul Taib Mahmud, including environmental degradation, illegal logging, and most recently, sexual and other human rights violations.
If that's not dastardly enough, Sarawak Report has alleged in its latest report that several inter-related companies linked by business and family ties to Samling were at the “epicentre” of the sub-prime mortgage crisis of 2007 that subsequently brought about the global financial crisis.
The companies named Sarawak Report are SunChase Holdings, its subsidiary Trimark Communities LLC and the Mountain House town project in San Joaquin, California.
San Joaquin Valley was said to have been one of three regions that recorded among the highest rates of sub-prime, or “piggyback” lending, in the US.

Samling 'surprised' by new allegations |
|
News
|
|
Sunday, 05 September 2010 |
Joseph Sipalan(Malaysiakini)
Timber giant Samling Global Ltd today said that they are "surprised" by new allegations that the firm is threatening to stop providing vital transport services to the Penans unless they drop their sexual abuse claims against the company's personnel.
The company shot down the claims made by the Bruno Manser Fund (BMF) in a statement issued on Monday, saying that they have never supported any wrongdoing by their staff.
"... Our position towards the (sexual abuse) issue remains the same. The company does not condone any illegal and criminal activities, and any staff suspected of such misconduct would be handed over to the authorities," the company said.
